The Penetraveis are spectacular room installations created by the Brazilian artist Helio Oiticica in the 1960s and '70s. They are experimental spaces that are only activated when used. Oiticica thus invented a format that continues to offer new potential for artistic interventions to this day. How does a Penetravel differ from other temporary exhibition formats? What challenges does it pose to curators? The first part of the book revolves around the political and artistic requisites for the Penetraveis.
