Pre operative assessment of the surgical patient is a key part of the perioperative process. However, it is one that cannot be separated from the other aspects of perioperative management, both clinical and administrative, that ensures the safe and effective treatment of surgical patients. There are a number of books on the market that examine perioperative management anaesthesia and surgical nursing that are only able to touch on the pre-operative assessment process.
