Annotation
Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. I have almost invariably strictly followed the order of the rhymes, a matter of considerable difficulty in English. Of our language, in this respect, we may well say with Fielding, in his Amelia Rhymes are difficult things; they are stubborn things, sir. Of the facilities for rhyming in the Portuguese I have already said enough in my Introduction to the Lusiads. Now and then (but in only two or three cases) I have been forced to change their order; the better to pre serve the feeling of the original; and this has been the case even in the famous No. XIX.
