Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The reference to Gildusme, in 1298, in the reign of Edward I in the Court Roll of the Manor of Wakefield, which I have seen and handled, effectively controverts the generally accepted etymology. There were no Guelders in England in 1298, as it was not until the reign of Edward III. That two weavers from Brabant settled at York. It will be noticed that Scatcherd first gives the date of settlement as 1571, but afterwards falls back on the reign of Edward III. Or soon after.
