Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. An abundant supply of pure and wholesome water is one of the first requirements of a growing city. The applicances necessary to procure this supply usually constitute one of the most important and expensive branches of the Public Works. The progress of an undertaking of this character is duly chronicled in the daily prints, and at its completion the citizens are generally familiar with the details; but as time goes on, the population grows, receiving additions from abroad, and the question soon is asked with increasing frequency: Whence does the water come, and how is it conveyed? Since the introduction of the water into the city of Brooklyn, there has been no description of the Water Works accessible to the general public, with the exception of the costly official memoir and the scattering articles in the daily papers.
