Croquet is a comparatively modern game. It has not the weight of years on its side to increase love and regard for it. The name seems to indicate France as its origin, and it is said to have been brought from there to Ireland, thence to England. Public match games were played in England as long ago as 1867. As a lawn game it became exceedingly popular, and the formation of the All England Croquet Club was succeeded by several annual contests for championship at Wimbledon. It has been even growing in favor of late years in England, judging from the formation of clubs and the public contests in different parts of the country, schedules of which are carefully published at the beginning of each season, thus eliciting a wide spread and increasing interest in the game.
