Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. When they are designated by the amount per foot, the usual way, the difference in diameters is always meant as in pipe thread tapers or in taper keys. Thus, pipe threads taper of an inch to every foot in length or 1 inch in 16 inches. This means a pipe tap with this taper and one foot long would be of an inch larger at one end than the other or that the diameter would increase - 6 of an inch to every inch in length, as shown in figure 1.
