Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The purpose and scope of this volume may be stated in a few words. Seven years ago the South African Native Races Committee published the chief results of their inquiries in a book entitled The Natives of South Africa. Since that time important changes have taken place in native affairs, and others are impending. Much valuable information has become available. The Com mittee believe, therefore, that the time has come when a supplementary volume, describing the new order of things, dealing concisely with some of the more im portant developments, and stating some of the chief results Of recent investigations, may be useful. They have not attempted to go over the same ground as that Of the previous book. The scope of the present volume is more limited. But the Committee hope that some thing may be gained by concentrating attention on a few features.
