Annotation
Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The aim of this book is to give an account of past excavations at Herculaneum; to describe, as they once were, those buildings that have been stripped of their treasures, left in ruins and reburied; and to connect with the buildings where they origi nally stood, the bronzes and marbles now in the Museum at Naples. The supreme interest of Herculaneum lies in the unique bronzes found there. This subject has been treated at some length, and an attempt made to assign the sculptures to their epochs and to identify them in the light of the most recent criticism. I have retained the old false ascriptions, as being familiar, for purposes of identification and sometimes added in brackets what would seem to be more correct names.
