Imperialism.
Annotation
Foster (sociology, U. of Oregon) synthesizes 50 years of writing by Monthly Review authors to negate the notion held widely by earlier commentators that the US was not an imperialist nation, and that US intervention in Iran, Guatamala, the Congo, and Vietnam were entirely in the interest of democracy. He steps through the war on terrorism, monopoly capital's control of globalization, the use of US military bases overseas and war as imperialist tools, the racist element within US imperialism, and the very real possibility that Iraq could become another Vietnam and lead to the failure of the US as an imperialist power. Foster holds that only recently did mainstream scholars interpret US foreign policy as imperialism, while in fact it was evident half a century ago.
