Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. #1 The Atlanta Race Riot occurred in September 1906, when a political battle between two candidates, Hoke Smith and Clark Howell, resulted in seven men being killed. The White family, who were mail carriers, were afraid to go out that day.#2 As the sun set, gunshots were heard. For the first time in Atlanta's history, a riot call was sounded at 11 p. m. The next morning, newspapers across the country featured front-page banner headlines and eyewitness accounts of the bloodletting.#3 As a 13-year-old, Walter had to choose whether he wanted to live his future as a Black man or a white one. His parents were of the last generation of African Americans who could speak of the slave era from memory.#4 Atlanta was the South's booming unofficial capital. It was here, on September 18, 1895, that Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta Exposition Speech, which came to be known as the Atlanta Compromise.
